TIFF 09: Day 7 - Solomon Kane
Not a fan. That’s how I came out thinking when this film was over. In all fairness, it’s not the fault of the filmmakers. I had a pretty bad experience with the audience around me, including, but not limited to sight, sound and smell issues. As well, medieval fantasy is one of my least favourite genres. Personal issues aside, the film still felt mediocre. You have this character, Solomon Kane, who is being hunted by the devil’s reaper. As a result of his own fear of death, Solomon decides to live his life of the “straight and narrow,” vowing to never kill again. It wouldn’t be much of a movie if he followed this ideology, so naturally (and spoiler alert, after the point he should have) he returns to his killing ways. The film features some good CGI beings (an an extremely freaky looking witch), but doesn’t stand out amoung the sea of other medieval fantasies.
