TIFF 09: Day 6 - [Rec] 2
[Rec] 2 is the sequel to the much loved Spanish film [Rec] (which was remade into the terrible Quarantine last year). The first film follows a journalist covering a story on a fire department as they enter a building that has to be quarantined. Only issue is that what they’re being quarantined from is a powerful virus that turns the dead into superfast zombies. The film ended with the main character, Ángela Vidal, being dragged away from the night vision camera by the first infected, Niña Medeiros. Many thought “how could there be a sequel, she clearly has died.” And they’re right. [Rec] 2 opens with this ending scene, and then immediately begins to before Vidal is pulled offscreen - in the form of a SWAT team being sent in. Upon entry into the apartment building, it is quickly revealed that the virus is actually the result of a demon infection, and it is through the power of Christ that the virus can be contained. I shit you not. What was originally a purely biological virus has now become the work of the devil. I was a little worried by this, and even loudly groaned during the screening, but it wound up working. Think The Exorcist, if it was just the possession scenes for the entire film. Also interesting is that the SWAT team is not the only focus of the film. The film takes place from the perspective of three cameras - the SWAT team’s, a group of teenager’s and another’s who I won’t say, in order to upkeep the suspense. The SWAT team’s and the teenager’s storylines take place at the same time, so it was interesting to see events from multiple perspectives. As for the actual story, [Rec] 2 is indeed a worthy sequel to [Rec], providing fright after fright. I was genuinely worried that it would not be scary as the first couple demon-virus affected appearances, but once they started introducing the possession aspect, the film was successful. By far the most intense scene in the film is when the remaining survivors must use the night vision technology to see what is not actually there (this doesn’t make sense when I’m writing it down, you’d need to see it).
