TIFF 09: Day 4 - The Loved Ones
The Loved Ones is another Australian horror film. This one seems to be the underdog of the TIFF Midnight Madness package – no one was expecting it to be this good, and boy was it good. It tells the tale of Lola, a young girl who has what one might call a bit of an obsession with the boys she loves. Again, not wanting to give too much away, this film is an extremely twisted “love” story that will leave you never being able to look at glitter, forks, disco balls and power drills the same way. The pacing of the film is absolutely marvelous, and one scene towards the end (you’ll know which one) received a huge applause for its comedic timing, and general creep factor. The use of the long take is amazing both during a strangling scene in a car (most directors would do an action-reaction of the characters fighting each other, but cinematographer Simon Chapman and director Sean Byrne elected to use a long shot, adding both to the comedy, and horror) and during that final comedic timing I mentioned before. I’ve just noticed it’s hard to talk up a film like this without spoiling it. I hope that this film gets a North American buyer and is released, even if only through direct-to-DVD. I will be picking this up.

Two penguins were walking across an iceberg. One penguin turned to the second penguin and said, "You look like you're wearing a tuxedo." And the second penguin said, "Maybe I am."
